Lego®-based Therapy Challenge Cards – A Great Way of Targeting Deficit Skills

Updated: May 29, 2023

Bea Inclusive TV and Podcast - Episode 008

Hey everybody. Happy Thursday.

Last week I didn’t post a new video. Instead, all my subscribers received FREE resources. If you missed it, please don’t worry as I placed the link to the Lego®- Themed Snap Cards below this video. You can use them in many ways during your LBTH or other types of intervention when you are checking on children’s feelings, when you teach Theory of Mind, as the building mats or visual support.

In this week’s episode of Bea Inclusive TV, I will talk about the Lego Challenge:

What is it?

Who can benefit from them?

Where to find them?

How to use them?

Also, you will watch a short video, sent by one of the Lego®-based Therapy Facilitators, with children using one of the challenges cards.

Lego® Challenge – What is it?

Lego®-based therapy challenge it’s one way out of many of delivering the Free-Style Building when facilitating Lego®- based Therapy in your setting. Lego®- based therapy challenge cards are very often used in a form of a card. There is plenty of Lego® challenge cards online. You can google them easily.

Who can benefit from Lego®-based therapy challenge cards?

Everyone!

This is a great way of enhancing children’s communication, language, and social skills. These challenges could be used in many different interventions that are targeting social communication difficulties.

A little warning: Free-Style Building, very often is mistaken with free play. A lot of people who organise after-school clubs or lunchtime activities are using Lego challenge cards as a form of independent free play. Please be aware that this is not the case when you facilitate Lego-based Therapy. There is one exception to this rule when we support children who experienced traumatic events, but this is the topic for the different VLOG. Otherwise, children work as a team/group and together through cooperation and collaboration build or fulfill the task placed on the Challenge card. Why is that? Well, simply saying as a therapist we must target children’s deficit skills, plan how we are going to improve children’s skills, plan the activities to teach and practice these skills, and Lego®-based Therapy Challenge is a great tool to do so.

How to use them?

There are many different ways of using Lego® Challenge Cards and it’s good to introduce this in the graduated approach.

You can make hundreds of different challenge cards but if you don’t have time to make them then as I mentioned before Google them, download, print, cut, and laminate them. Have a look at few examples of challenge cards.

Today you will be able to see a group of children using one challenge card and working around one goal, which in this case was to build a simple tower by using only one hand. What are the reasons for introducing this activity to the group! What skills the facilitator was targeting, teaching, and practicing? Please leave your comments below this video or email them to me at bea@beainclusive.com

Ok. There you have it!

I hope you enjoyed this short video. I believe that this will help you in delivering your own Lego challenge activity.

I hope that you enjoyed this video and I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

After you’ve finished, please join the discussion below. Don’t forget to like and subscribe.
